Electric Furnace

The slag produced in the flash smelting furnace and the converters is treated in an electric furnace to recover the copper it contains (1.5% and 5%, respectively), leaving the final copper content at below 1%. The slag left is then cooled and granulated with water to make an industrial product called iron silicate.

Atlantic Copper’s electric furnace has a diameter of 12.2 meters. It is fitted with three electrodes, each a meter in diameter.
