We are fully aware of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the UN and have implemented them in all our areas of activity, making us a benchmark for industrial sustainability. We believe that we can be part of the solution to address climate change.
Environment, Society and Corporate Governance (ESG)
We are a model of sustainability
We know that climate change poses important challenges that demand our response. And copper will play an essential role in the technologies needed to obtain clean energy, helping the planet’s transition to a low-carbon economy.
We believe that we have the opportunity to supply the world with responsibly produced copper, which means operating in a way that manages and mitigates our emissions and other climate-related risks. And we’re doing it:
- We have reduced unit energy consumption by 20% in 10 years, positioning ourselves as the world leader in energy efficiency in the sector since 2019.
- Over the past 20 years, we have invested 180 million euros in environmental protection measures.
Global committed
Our vocation has always been, and will be, to position ourselves as a company that anticipates the future, and today the future means achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. Five years have passed since the SDGs were signed, and we have managed to implement them in all our areas of activity, making us a model of industrial sustainability.
In 2021, our company joined the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), the world’s largest corporate sustainability initiative, which has brought together more than 13,000 entities in 160 countries to date to promote the SDGs. They are integrated into our system for analyzing and assessing sustainable development risks and opportunities, in accordance with the FCX Risk Register Process.
We integrated the SDGs into the system of risk analysis and assessment and sustainable development opportunities, as per the FCX SD Risk Register Process.

“We advocate responsible access to raw materials, as well as their reuse and recycling to combat climate change”
We are concerned about people
We carry out social actions that are aimed at improving the lives of the people around us. To combat inequality and poverty, we collaborate economically with non-profit social entities and humanitarian organizations that make a significant impact in the area.
We promote access to quality education through a wide-ranging program of national and international scholarships, meal grants, research projects, the encouragement of vocational training, or through grants.
In addition, to bridge the gender gap and advance real equality for women and men, we design harassment prevention and equality plans and retributive policies, encouraging women’s promotion to managerial positions and favoring egalitarian family life balance.
We are concerned about the planet
We are aware of the privileged environment in which we find ourselves, next to the Marismas del Odiel Nature Reserve. This is why we carry out numerous conservation and protection actions to help build a more sustainable and environmentally friendly planet. At our plant, we have adopted the Environmental Management System 14001:2015, as well as the Energy Management System 50001:2011, reducing the use of natural resources and CO2 emissions.
We advocate inclusive and sustainable industrialization that reduces the environmental impact of all our operations, and we invest an estimated 10 million euros annually in innovation to improve production processes.
We also develop outreach activities in the area, aimed at the conservation of biodiversity and the sustainable use of marine resources and terrestrial ecosystems, in collaboration with the Regional Government of Andalusia’s departments of Education and Sports, and Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Sustainable Development.
And we contribute value to society
We develop projects to reduce inequality and increase quality jobs, favoring decent working conditions, promoting youth employment and boosting the local economy through Huelva-based suppliers. Our activity thus generates an important economic dynamism in the province, contributing an average annual added value of about 150 million euros and maintaining numerous jobs. In addition, we evaluate our suppliers on their compliance with legal, tax, social security, risk prevention and environmental requirements, among others.
We advocate a public-private partnership that promotes responsible industrial production with the support of public administrations, as well as through Corporate Social Responsibility policies that favor these alliances. We have a code of conduct and a crime prevention plan in place, as well as various training activities for the workforce, designed to promote a respectful and inclusive work environment.
