At Atlantic Copper we take the environmental impact of our activities into consideration and integrate sustainability into our strategy. This means protecting the environment, preserving biodiversity, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and our water footprint.

Mitigating environmental impacts
We want to avoid, minimize and mitigate the potential environmental impacts of our operational activities. We know that it is essential to reconcile economic and social progress with the protection of nature so that future generations can enjoy an inhabitable and sustainable planet.
We want to avoid, minimize and mitigate any potential environmental impacts of our operational activities.
Our Environmental Policy aims to ly the foundations to reduce the impact of our production processes on the environment.
Reduction in unit energy consumption by 30% in the last 10 years.
Over the last decade, we have succeeded in reducing CO2 unit emissions (scope 1 and 2) by 40% and SO2 emissions by 4%.
In 2023, more than 51% of the electricity consumed in the metallurgical complex came from low emission sources and high efficiency cogeneration
An average annual investment of 25 million euros in innovation, environment, safety and operational and energy efficiency.
Our Environmental Policy clearly establishes the commitments that Atlantic Copper has made to protecting the environment and the climate. To ensure its compliance, we have an Integrated Environmental Management System (IEMS) that meets the international ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems standard.
Responsible waste management
Responsible waste management: Responsible waste management and disposal is essential to comply with environmental regulations.
We are developing numerous actions to:
- Install new technologies for waste prevention and minimization.
- Waste recycling and recovery using authorized agents.
Energy efficiency and renewable energies
We work to ensure access to affordable, safe, sustainable and modern energy. To this end, we have incorporated the ISO 50001 Energy Management System. This system was certified for the first time in 2011, making us the first copper smelter to obtain it, the seventh of Spain’s intensive energy-use companies to do so and the first in Andalusia, which puts us at the cutting edge and makes us a benchmark.
Thanks to this, the smelter has reduced its unit energy consumption by 30% in the last 10 years.
Our commitment to the environment, sustainability and the circular economy leads us to self-generate electricity for the plant’s consumption by recovering the energy generated through the heat of our processes.
In addition to this green electricity, we use energy from the long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs) signed with Fortia Energia from low emission sources.
Water Stewardship
Water is essential in industrial processes. Therefore, responsible water consumption is one of our priorities for reducing our water footprint. In addition, we have adapted our smelter facilities for sustainable and environmentally friendly water management.
