Huelva, September 24, 2025. This week, Atlantic Copper began the installation of CirCular Project environmental protection equipment. This is an innovative system that will allow the new Atlantic Copper plant to recover metals essential for the transition to a sustainable economy while observing the highest European environmental standards. The technology used will enable excellent performance even in the most unfavorable weather conditions.
This equipment, which in total will occupy more than 50% of the overall CirCular area and will include two structures approximately 75 meters high, will be equipped with the most advanced technologies on the market. The company is thus demonstrating its interest in industrial innovation and research, areas in which it invests more than 10 million euros annually.
The CirCular plant is the first in southern Europe to be dedicated to the recovery of non-ferrous scrap metal from obsolete electrical or electronic equipment (WEEE). The project, declared of strategic interest by the European Commission and the regional government of Andalusia, involves an investment of more than 400 million euros and will make it possible to process up to 60,000 tons a year of seven of the metals essential to the energy and digital transition.
“CirCular will make Huelva a strategic point in Europe in the drive toward a more sustainable economy, and will reinforce Atlantic Copper as a key actor for reducing dependence on external suppliers of materials critical for the European Union,” said Macarena Gutiérrez, CEO of the company, who stressed that this is not an isolated operation. “The initiative is part of Atlantic Copper’s broader strategy to promote the circular economy, including heat recovery, water reuse and the development of new technologies to recover other critical metals,” added Gutiérrez.
Plant construction will create more than 600 direct jobs, which will be a boost for local employment and Huelva’s economy. Once commissioned, the plant will generate around 350 direct and derived jobs, including technical, operational and management profiles.
